Meet the Maker ~ Elise Gill of The Elizabeth Collection
Our third Meet the Maker interview is with the beautiful Elise of The Elizabeth Collection! Elise is passionate about creating sweet, timeless, delicately-detailed garments for little girls! She also LOVES to design matching pieces so that sisters can wear co-ordinating outfits! Without further ado, let's get to know a little bit more about The Elizabeth Collection!
Q. Please start by telling us how The Elizabeth Collection's story began.
It all began on my maternity leave with our second daughter, Abby, in 2018. I was drowning in sleep deprivation as she never slept. I was too tired to ever leave the house, but being me I needed to do something to keep me occupied at home. So, I decided to teach myself to sew. I have always loved little girl’s clothes and matching them in the same outfit, so I was in my element being able to pick the design, colours and fabrics of their outfits. It was my creative outlet! I would sew during the day when the girls played. I wanted to learn more about sewing. I was obsessed with it. So I went to night classes with my sister in law and my passion grew. To be completely honest, I fell into this business from passion, I never dreamed I would own a business let alone create and design children’s clothes. To be even more honest, it was my two sisters who pushed and made my business page.
Q. Where do you find inspiration for your beautiful designs?
Ultimately, I am inspired by my three girls and all designs are created with them in mind. They are my inspiration and muses. After welcoming our third daughter into the world this year, we decided to become an all girl brand as this is where my passion now lies.
Q. Can you tell us a little about your design process? Or about the timeline of a collection from start to finish?
I do all the designing in our family home, surrounded by my girls. Usually I come up with my design ideas when I am watching them play (sister bond) or when I am supposed to be asleep. I design my clothes and accessories to be comfortable for everyday wear and special occasions, durable, and timeless. It's important for me that where possible our clothes can be adjustable so you get longer wear out of them. I am conscious of slow fashion; I want my garments to be able to be passed down from sibling to sibling. I love matching my girls so I use the same fabric on different garments that are age appropriate so you can match your girls as well. I use natural fabrics like cotton and linen as it is better for our children as well as the earth. And the company I work with to make my clothes are recognised as ethical. I love adding simple but beautiful feminine details like ruffles, lace, tulle etc.
Q. Which is your favourite piece that you have created?
Our new lace dress and romper from the Florence collection and our bibs.
Q. What is one business achievement that you are most proud of?
We have starting selling internationally and it amazes me that my little business is now being worn all over the world.
Q. What has been your favourite part of this journey so far?
The highlights are honestly endless, seeing my garments on people’s children always makes me feel really honoured. When people send me photos of their children and tell me how much they love them and how much their girls love them. Repeat customers. Every order I still do a little happy dance. The relationships I have formed because of this business. I have met and virtually met so many amazing mums and other business women, and I love that I now belong to a community.
Q. How do you balance work and mum life?
I like to keep busy, so I enjoy the juggle most days. I do get overwhelmed sometimes, but my husband always helps me get back on track. Honestly it’s really hard, I get loads of mum guilt. The girls are really good at expressing when they need me to STOP and just be with them though. I went back to night duty as a midwife after finishing Abby’s maternity leave so I could fit more in a day and I’ll probably do the same when I go back to work after Edie’s maternity leave. I am very lucky to have two jobs that I love and have so much passion for. They say that behind every good man is an even better woman. But in our case, it’s the other way around. I could not do any of it if it wasn’t for Aaron. I am still learning how to balance and juggle it all, especially since it’s all done in my home, on my phone, laptop etc. so it’s hard to switch off sometimes.
Q. What do you think the future holds for The Elizabeth Collection?
I am honestly taking it one day at a time. Some days I am still coming to terms with the fact that I now have a business. I would love to expand our range and be able to release more designs more often, as well as be stocked globally. I hope that in years to come, The Elizabeth Collection is loved and worn all over the world by beautiful wildflowers.
I hope that you have enjoyed getting to know the story behind The Elizabeth Collection and how this beautiful brand came to be! We are always in awe of the dreamy garments that Elise designs and we hope you love them as much as we do.
